A: Besides ensuring that your oil changes are completed on a regularly scheduled interval as per the manufacturer recommendations for these engines the next best preventative maintenance that you can provide your vehicle with this Turbo Direct Injected engine is to change out your engine air filter and engine fuel filter on a regular basis.
The fuel pumps on these vehicles are extremely complicated and costly to repair or replace. To ensure their safety the manufacturer has engineered what most would deem an oversized fuel filter for the application to ensure that no sediment or debris is allowed to enter the engine.
As is the case with most diesel engines regular fuel filter replacement is encouraged as these filters can and usually do become clogged with debris. A clogged fuel filter will decrease the fuel flow to the engine and if left unaddressed could potentially and will eventually damage the fuel pump and or fuel injectors.
The cost of replacing the injectors or fuel pump far exceeds the cost of regular fuel filter replacement on these vehicles.
How much air does a diesel engine require for proper operation compared to gas? A lot.
Diesel engines operate at a considerably leaner air fuel ratio than gasoline engines, therefore they like to have unobstructed airflow. Diesel engines operate typically between 25:1 to 40:1 as compared to the normal gasoline range of 12:1 to 15:1.
So be sure to let your engines breathe to give you the most efficiency that they were designed to and can produce
