This is presentation at a Salinas Union High School District (SUHSD) Board meeting which took place on 8/24/2021 where the Open Letter written by the Independent Institute addressed to Governor Gavin Newsom, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, the State Board of Education, (show more) and the Instructional Quality Commission entitled Replace the Proposed New California Math Curriculum Framework is presented. The 2021 New California Math Curriculum Framework removes advanced classes for all kids until 11th grade, keeping all kids in the same class until then regardless of their preparation, ability, and motivation. Math education is slowed down. For example, algebra is delayed until 9th grade which prevents kids from reaching key mathematical fluency levels by 12th grade that are important for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) college majors. The Open Letter is co-signed by 1163 and counting California STEM professionals, mainly college professors, and these people are telling parents and students, that if our kids go through math in this framework, they will not be prepared for college STEM majors, and they will not be qualified for STEM jobs.
