In 2017, the Swanage Railway hosted a collection of six Bulleid Pacific locomotives. Seven years later, and the railway one-up their previous event, with no less than eight locomotives convening for Strictly Bulleid II, the largest collection of operational Bullleid Pacifics since 1967.
Six of the eight attendees represented Bulleid's West Country and Battle of Britain engines, with rebuilt engines 34028 'Eddystone' and 34053 'Sir Keith Park' joined with un-rebuilt examples 34070 'Manston', 34072 '257 Squadron', all from Southern Locomotives Limited, in addition to 34081 '92 Squadron' from the Battle of Britain Locomotive Society and 34092 'City of Wells' from the East Lancashire Railway. Unfortunately, with mechanical issues, 34081 would see minimal use during the event.
Alongside these light pacifics, the event saw two Merchant Navy locomotives running together, a first for preservation, with 35006 'Peninsular & Oriental S.N. Co' making a rare appearance away from her home base at the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Steam Railway, meeting with Carnforth based Merchant 35018 'British India Line'.
The weekend was 34053 'Sir Keith Park's first major service following the completion of overhaul by Southern Locomotives Limited in May, which saw the engine's boiler having been swapped with one previously carried by 34010 'Sidmouth'. Throughout the event, 34053 would carry a disc featuring duty number 303, a nod to the temporary renaming of the locomotive to '303 Squadron' later in the year.
The final day of the event saw each locomotive running with a variety of Southern Region headboards, including those associated with the Merchant Navy boat trains. The event was rounded off with a line-up of SLL's four operational Bulleid Pacifics, marking the first time the group have had four operational engines together, with special access given to visitors to walk the lineside south of Corfe Castle station to view the display.
