Paresthesia is an abnormal sensation of the skin: (tingling, pricking, numbness, sometimes described as pins-and-needle.
The most common, everyday cause of tingling sensation, is temporary restriction of nerve impulses to an area of nerves, commonly caused by leaning or resting on parts of the body, such as the legs.
So, most Common cause of tingling is nerve compression.
Most pressure-induced paraesthesia results from awkward posture, such as engaging in cross-legged sitting for prolonged periods of time.
when sustained pressure has been applied over a nerve, inhibiting or stimulating its function. Removing the pressure typically results in gradual relief of these paresthesias.
Paresthesias are usually painless and can occur anywhere on the body, but most commonly occur in the arms and legs.
The most familiar kind of paresthesia is the sensation known as "pins and needles" after having a limb "fall asleep".
A less well-known and uncommon paresthesia is formication, the sensation of insects crawling on the skin.
Another type of paresthesia can be: The briefest, electric shock type of paresthesia, caused by tweaking the ulnar nerve near the elbow; this phenomenon known as bumping one's "funny bone".
More serious cause of tingling paresthesia is caused by diabetic neuropathy. At this case there is direct damage to the nerves themselves. which is called neuropathy.
If person is overweight and have other risk factors for diabetes, numbness of legs can be sign of diabetes.
In many cases tingling is the first sign patient experience, when she has diabetes mellitus.
Other causes of paresthesias: Hyperventilation syndrome and panic attacks. A cold sore outside the mouth can be preceded by tingling.
In older individuals, paresthesia is often the result of poor circulation in the limbs (such as in peripheral vascular disease), most often caused by atherosclerosis.
Without a proper supply of blood and nutrients, nerve cells can no longer adequately send signals to the brain.
Because of this, paresthesia can also be a symptom of vitamin deficiency and malnutrition. For example:
Vitamin B12 deficiency and Alcoholism.
as well as metabolic disorders like diabetes, hypothyroidism, and hypoparathyroidism. It can also be a symptom of mercury poisoning.
Other less common causes include: Central nervous system ischemia, obstruction, compression, infection, inflammation and degenerative conditions.
