Russian and Chechen officials on Thursday (25/5) began peace talks
in Grozny, the shattered capital of the breakaway republic of
Chechnya. The talks involved representatives of the
Chechen rebels, the Kremlin and the Moscow-backed Chechen
administration and were being sponsored by the Organisation for
Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Nikolai
Semyonov, who heads Moscow's efforts to restore control over the
region, was representing Russia. Usman Imayev represented the rebel Chechen leader.
