If you have atrial fibrillation, you are at risk of stroke development if a clot forming in the heart breaks off and enters the brain's blood vessels. Blood thinners are not always effective and in some patients, blood thinners are not well tolerated. In these patients, a minimally invasive procedure to close an area in the heart called the left atrial appendage can be the only measure left to prevent a patient from suffering a life-changing stroke.
You must be assessed for the need to take blood thinners like warfarin or NOAC to prevent this. If you cannot take blood thinners then you will need your left atrial appendage closed to reduce the risk of stroke development. The good news is that surgeons can do this by keyhole surgery!
