Spanish coach Sergio Lobera, along with his assistants Jesus Tato and Manuel Sayabera, left Goa last night amidst emotional scenes at Dabolim airport. FC Goa supporters club 'Gaur Army' were at the forefront during the sendoff.
Lobera,43, had joined FC Goa for the fourth edition of the ISL and took the team to the playoffs stage, wiping the downcast mood in the state following the change in ownership of the ISL franchise from Shrinivas Dempo-Dattaraj Salgaocar to Jaydev Mody, who became FC Goa’s majority stakeholder in 2016.
In the subsequent season, FC Goa went down to Bengaluru FC in the ISL final but followed it up with their maiden trophy, winning the Super Cup. This was Lobera's third year in Goa and promised a lot more until Friday night when reports of his sacking erupted plunging the tiki-taka football lovers into a pall of gloom. FC Goa confirmed that they had 'mutually parted ways' with the Spanish support staff, 24 hours later. During the same time, former Barcelona assistant-coach Lobera released a statement on behalf of Spanish coaching staff expressing that they are 'really unhappy about this decision' by the club.
Meanwhile, FC Goa have still not disclosed the reasons that led to the departure of higly-rated Lobera, who leaves an indelible impression in the club's history with his spectacular brand of champagne football having brought some of the best players to the ISL particularly Ferran Corominas, Ahmed Jahouh, Hugo Boumous and ex-midfielder Manuel Lanzarote.
