Grouse hunting dog training continues, but it just so happens that we now are carrying a gun! This entire first season of grouse hunting with Máquina is looked at as much as training as anything. In this and the coming episodes of the series, you will see just that. Each opportunity on a wild grouse or woodcock is an opportunity for this little grouse hunting dog to learn, and for us to learn as well.
There will be some real highs, there will be some real lows. In our opinion, there is no bird that is more challenging for both a bird dog and bird hunter than the wild ruffed grouse. There's a quote that has stuck with me when I think about bird dog training as a whole: "Good farm bird dogs are made on pheasant farms. Good bird dogs are made on wild birds."
Unlike much of our retriever training series that we've done in the past, a huge part of training a grouse hunting dog is letting the dog teach themselves, and that can only come from giving them opportunities to mess up on, bump, and miss wild birds. The grouse is the ultimate teacher, its our job to put Máquina in position to be taught.
We hope you enjoy this Northern Wisconsin Grouse and Woodcock hunt. This season was one we won't soon forget as we watch our little English Setter develop into "The Machine".
