I have a question for you.
Are you so tied to the idea of perfection that you’re shooting yourself in the foot?
That happened to a client of mine who's a high-level executive with a Fortune 100 company.
He’d been working with the Accelerated Method for about eight weeks.
Since starting the program, he’s experienced a ton of changes. For example, he lost 14 pounds, his energy is through the roof, and he’s much more patient and understanding than he used to be.
Once upon a time, he was so irritable that people couldn’t stand to be around him.
He was constantly on edge because he not only had unrealistic expectations for himself but for the entire world.
One of the biggest things he learned during the program was how crucial it is to give up the need for everything to be perfect. He told me, "You know, Logan, it used to be that if I couldn't do everything exactly to plan, I would say 'to hell with it' and not do anything at all."
This guy would go balls out for a couple of weeks before running into an obstacle or other problem. At that point, he would throw up his hands in defeat.
He’d mutter to himself, “Man, why can’t I stick with anything?”
This kind of mental torture was horrible for his self-esteem. Because of what he learned in the program, he’s now easier on himself.
This means that on mornings he misses a workout due to a time crunch or other reason, he doesn’t completely write it off.
Instead, he finds ways to make progress…even if only a little bit.
For example, he used to always take the elevator to get to his office, which is on the top floor of his building. Now, he takes the stairs.
That’s five flights of stairs up and five flights down!
Because he does that every chance he gets, he’s racking up steps on his Apple Watch like there’s no tomorrow. What I share with my clients and want to share with you is:
Work with what you have, with where you are, with what you’ve got.
Instead of pushing yourself to do a strenuous workout when you’re completely overwhelmed, try doing something small in the direction of your dreams. That might be parking a little further away when going to the store instead of doing a two-hour gym workout where you're mercilessly crushing every one of your fitness goals.
If you can relinquish your need for perfection, I think you’ll find you’re more consistent over time…
…which is a thousand times more rewarding than occasional spurts of intense energy.
I'll take the guys who can do that over the bros who give up when even the slightest thing goes wrong. These kinds of dudes say "to the hell with it" when reality doesn't conform to the perfect plans in their noggins.
Don’t be like those guys—I know you’re better than that!
Till next time,
Logan
