@OuterSpaceNews - Soyuz is a series of spacecraft designed by Sergey Korolev for the Soviet Union's space program.
Soyus continued the design of the Voskhod aircraft and was originally built as part of the Luna program. Soyuz planes are launched on Soyuz rockets, as part of the Soyuz program and the newer Zond program. The Soyuz planes were then used to transport cosmonauts to and from the Salyut, Mir and International Space Stations. The first unmanned Soyuz launch was on 28 November 1966 while its first manned flight occurred on 23 April 1967.
The Soyuz plane was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Between the retirement of the Space Shuttle in 2011 and the SpaceX Crew Dragon's 2020 demo flight, the Soyuz served as the only means of making manned space flights and reaching the International Space Station, which is still in use today.
For more than 40 years, Soyuz rockets have been launched into space – they are the longest-serving route to space. The design goes back to the Vostok launcher, which was used for the first manned spaceflight in 1961, carrying Yuri Gagarin. The Soyuz spacecraft can manoeuvre, rendezvous and dock in orbit.
When was Soyuz invented?
With over 1,900 flights since its debut in 1966, the Soyuz is the most frequently used launch vehicle in the world as of 2021.
What is Soyuz named after?
Soyuz means "union" in Russian. The Soyuz programme is the longest operational human spacecraft programme in the history of space exploration. The first crewed flight into space was on 23 April 1967.
