ATTENTION: The recipe Yiayia uses is posted below but Yiayia herself DOES NOT follow it.
Recipe:
5 lb. flour
3 pkg. dry yeast
2 eggs
1½ tsp. salt
1 lb. butter
1 tsp. ground mahlepi
Warm water (as needed)
For outside ingredients:
1 lb. sesame seeds
Combine flour, yeast, spices, sugar, and salt. Mix the dry ingredients with shortening. Add eggs and warm water, as needed, and knead thoroughly. Allow dough to rise to about double original size. Make strings into any shapes you desire, circles, braids. Use sesame seeds to decorate and hold shapes together. Allow breads to rise and bake in moderate oven, about 350°, until well browned. At Easter time, dyed eggs are often used.
