My name is Nicole Chiota-McCollum, MD. I’m one of the vascular neurologists in the UVA comprehensive stroke center. A patient coming to the emergency department with stroke symptoms can expect a flurry of activity when they arrive.
My colleagues in the emergency department do the initial assessment, and if they determine that the patient is in fact having stroke symptoms and may be eligible for an intervention, they enact what we call a stroke alert and that actually sets in process a sequence of events.
The stroke team, which includes an in-house neurology resident as well as a senior resident fellow or stroke attending, are all then alerted to come and evaluate the patient at the bedside.
UVA is a comprehensive stroke center, so not only do we have the ability to provide that clot-busting medication, TPA, but we also have the ability to do, almost like a plumber, go in and pull out that clot which has also been shown to improve stroke care.
