In this Quick Drum Lesson, I'll demonstrate step by step one way to play a Partido Alto Samba pattern and I've included the notation onscreen.
I recently watch a video by Kalani where he played a variety of percussion instruments to create a simple samba groove and this is my reinterpretation of his ideas but played on drum set. I've been playing heel toe splash for 20 years or so but always did the splashes on the beats (1, 2, 3, 4). Lately, I've been working at playing the splashes on the &'s, which is slowly becoming more natural, so I added that under the samba bass drum pattern. I also added an unusual e&a x-hat pattern to add a shaker-like motion to the groove.
