Re-up from 2017.
I remember when I worked on this one in December 2017. I had already done dozens of similar covers and I was running low on ideas. Up to that point I think I'd only covered songs that I knew incredibly well; could play them from start to finish, knew the vocal parts and so on. Of course, I knew At Dawn They Sleep, but I always preferred the version on Live Intrusion to the original so I hadn't listened to it anywhere near as much as the likes of South of Heaven or Raining Blood.
Also, I couldn't play a single note of the song, so recording the demo meant having one eye on Songsterr and the other on my recording laptop. I did each section of the song separately: first learned it from the online tabs, then transposed it to acoustic, then recorded it. Consequently the version sounds maybe more disjointed than usual and quite a few of the riffs are just played exactly as they are on the album version.
And fucking hell, did I have a miserable time with the vocals :) The song has so many verses and parts that by the time I got to the end I was doing spoken word stuff, backwards stuff, just scraping the bottom of the barrel so I didn't have to resort to the usual "shitty Ghost backing vocals" style I always defaulted to in the absense of vocal melodies.
