Sharpen your chisel or hand plane iron with diamond plates, it changed the way I woodwork. Previously I sharpened using sandpaper on a granite block because I couldn’t afford diamond plates but the paper would come up, tear, and I could only sharpen on the pull stroke.
Once I invested in some good diamond plates, I was able to sharpen quickly, efficiently, and more often as a result. This allowed me to always be working with sharp tools and led to an overall improved workflow.
In this video I discuss how I sharpen my tools on my diamond stones and why I use diamond stones.
Quickly:
Primary advantages
1. It’s faster
2. The plates remain flat
3. It’s more convenient
Drawbacks
1. Cost
2. Need to keep in rust free environment
More in Depth:
It’s Faster
Diamond is one of the hardest if not the hardest material in the world with means it will sharpen anything and does so quickly. The speed that Diamond plates cut through even tool steel is remarkable which means it will sharpen your tools more quickly than any non-diamond method.
The Plates Remain Flat
Other sharpening methods that use ceramic plates or the like will hollow out as you use them which leads to a concave face and a less controlled sharpening. Diamond plates are diamond encrusted steal plates which are flat and will never unflawed through use.
It’s More Convenient
Diamond plates require just a little bit of cutting fluid and a rinse off in the end which is easier than letting stones soak, having to flatten stones or taping/gluing sandpaper onto a granite block. This provides less resistance to sharpening mid-project or at the end/beginning.
Cost
Diamond plates will run between $50-$150 depending on the set purchased. It is critical to get diamond plates from a reputable company because the diamond will be properly adhered to provide a long life. One of the primary contributors to price on diamond plates is the size of the plates. The company we bought our plates from sells both a 2”x6” and a 3”x8”.
Rust Free Environment
Because diamond stones are adhered to a steel plate, rust prevention must be taken into account. This means removing any remaining water from the plates after rinsing and ensuring they are stored in a dry place.
