"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much for coming today. Radovan Karadzic is now in the custody of International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. After 13 years at large he arrived in the Netherlands early this morning and has been transferred to United Nation detention centre in the Hague. His initial appearance before one of the Tribunal judges will take place tomorrow afternoon. The arrest of Radovan Karadzic is immensely important for the victims who had to wait far too long for this day. It's also very important for international justice because it clearly demonstrates that there is no alternative to the rest of war criminals and that there can't be no safe haven for fugitives."

STORYLINE:
Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic was transferred to a UN jail cell in the middle of the night and will face a judge on Thursday, the
first step of his trial on charges of waging genocide against non-Serbs during the Balkan wars of the 1990s.
His arrival early on Wednesday in the Netherlands marked the end of a 13-year effort by the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal to take custody of its most wanted war criminal.
He is accused of responsibility for the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the sufferings of hundreds of thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats.
"The arrest of Radovan Karadzic is immensely important for the victims who had to wait far too long for this day," prosecutor Serge Brammertz told a news conference on Wednesday.
"It's also very important for international justice because it clearly demonstrates that there is no alternative to the rest of war criminals and that there can't be no safe haven for fugitives," he said.
During the 1992-1995 Bosnian war, Karadzic was known as the urbane, intellectual face of a monstrous regime blamed for the worst atrocities in Europe since World War II.
Karadzic was flown in overnight on a Serbian government business jet from Belgrade.
The tribunal declined to give details of the transfer, citing security in future cases.
But the confirmation came shortly after a helicopter landed behind the high wall of the jail while another helicopter hovered overhead.
He said it would take some months before the prosecution and the defence were ready to start the trial.
