Mr Koopman discussed the European Commission's recently revised State aid rules, with particular regard to the Commission's proposal for a single resolution mechanism (SRM) for European banks. The resolution mechanism, which formally incorporates the State aid process into the resolution of banks, has proven contentious among Member States, and will be the subject of intense debate in Europe in the coming months.

Gert Jan Koopman has been Deputy Director General for State Aid at the European Commission's Directorate General for Competition (DG COMP) since 2010, and is responsible for the Commission's control of State Aid and the co-ordination of the 1000 State Aid cases managed by DG COMP. Mr. Koopman has also served as Director for Policy Strategy and Co-ordination and Director for Economic Service and Structural Reform at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs.
