SBIRT is an intervention that seeks to decrease substance use that puts the health of people with HIV at risk. SBIRT in health care settings has three components: screening clients for severity of substance use (alcohol and drugs); providing a brief intervention to increase client awareness of substance use risk and motivation to change behaviors; and referring clients for further evaluation and treatment as needed.
