Built in 1844 by hand, The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is officially the world's oldest subway tunnel. Rediscovered in 1980 by Bob Diamond, the tunnel was recently in a state of excavation, though in 2009 (just weeks after this Rocketboom report), the city closed off access and the tunnel has been closed ever since.
Best accessed at the intersection of Atlantic and Court Streets, the historical landmark spans the Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill neighborhoods in New York City's Brooklyn borough.
