Dr Maran talks about one of the common concern every one of us have, are refrigerated food healthy? He clearly opines that they are not healthy. He goes on to ask when the last time we cleaned our refrigerator was. He asks us to clean once every week with soap and water. He adds that our refrigerator should be deep cleaned every 3 months by removing every item in the fridge. Dr Maran points to the trend of precooking and storing the food for a week these days. He says that this is definitely not good for health and storing food for a maximum of 3 days in the fridge should be okay. Since veggies and fruits, and some packed meats are stored for more than many months in the cold storage, storing them for more time in the normal fridges at home is not recommended. He says that cooked food cannot be used again if it is more than 24-48 hours. He insists that when stale foods are thrown away the fridge needs to be cleaned. He brings to our notice that most food loses its nutrient value when stored for a longer period. Dr Maran tells us that items like junk foods, sauces, etc when stored for long get infected with bacteria and other pathogens that live in the fridge. He concludes by saying that a child who has been used to eating out of food from the fridge is more affected in health than a 40-year-old.
