Tawny Owls are nocturnal and hard to see, so the male's 'hooting' or the sharp 'ke-wick' call of a female can often be the best clue there's one around. The BTO Tawny Owl Calling Survey was a citizen science project that asked almost 10,000 volunteers to record when they heard a Tawny Owl near where they lived, as well as the amount of cloud cover. As this video explains, the chance of a Tawny Owl being present decreased with higher levels of artificial light (a measure of urbanisation) but increased with the amount of local broadleaf woodland.
