FLIGHT #1/7 MOTOR SICH YAK-40 UR-88310 KIEV (IEV) – ZAPORIZHIA (OZH), MARCH 17, 2014
This video has been remastered and substantially improved in Sight & Sound and replaces the video published in 2015.
In March 2014 I still had some unused vacation days from the previous year and so I decided to do a little tour of the network of Motor Sich Airlines, based in Zaporizhia, in the Central South Eastern part of the Ukraine.
My pal, Steve Kinder needed no persuasion and instantly agreed to join.
The plan was to sample the Classic AN-24 in depth because the AN-148 and AN-74 of Motor Sich are by no doubt bound to survive their older sister by years to come.
This video features the evening flight from Kiev-Zhuliany airport in Kiev’s Western suburbs to Zaporizhia.
After a few inquiries in the brand new domestic terminal, we were led to meet the Station Manager of Motor Sich Airlines who offered us VIP-treatment and invited us to the JETEX-lounge in the old terminal.
To our big surprise, the AN-24 has been replaced by the YA-40 UR-88310 and we were assigned two empty rows of our choice in a fully packed plane.
Crews were informed and instructed to show their best cooperation to fulfill every possible wish.
The YAK-40 is not easy to tape on video, especially not during the night, because most of the windows are contaminated and in a small convex shape, which makes focusing a real challenge.
The YAK-40 is not the exactly considered to be a fast plane, yet required 20 minutes less flying time than the usual AN-24 on this route.
After 55 minutes we were back on the ground, the shortest scheduled flight on this trip.
To our great surprise we were asked to leave the aircraft as soon as possible because the engines needed to be started once again to taxy over to the other side of the runway, the home base of Motor Sich Airlines.
