Darby Shaw (Julia Roberts) has a theory on who killed two supreme court justices, and gives it to her professor/boyfriend, Thomas Callahan (Sam Shepard). He doesn't believe The Pelican Brief, but passes it to his friend that works for the FBI, Gavin Verheek (John Heard) as a joke. After reading it, Gavin gives it to his boss Denton Voyls (James Sikking). It then gets to the White House and Fletcher Cole(Tony Goldwyn). Cole wants it buried, and people start dying. Professor Callahan is killed in a car bomb, that Darby witnesses. She has to go on the run, and is almost killed multiple times. She enlists the help of Gray Grantham (Denzel Washington) to break the story. Together they expose a plot that billionaire Matise enacted. The president and Cole plan to restructure the supreme court to their liking which could lead to bad official rulings by the supreme court justices that feel beholden and have been appointed in bad faith.

Uncle Greg has to tell his niece, Lori, a bedtime story but doesn't know any of the traditional ones. He uses his knowledge of movies, in this case, "Pelican Brief", to deliver. His misremembering and interpretation of events seem to twist the story into parody. Lacking any form of parental skills, he fumbles through the movie forgetting sometimes that he is telling this to a child.
