President Donald Trump accepted his party’s renomination on the final night of the RNC, breaking with tradition using the White House as a political backdrop despite legal and ethical concerns.
The evening inside the grounds of the executive mansion was a polished and well choreographed affair but on the streets of Washington DC protesters spilled out to register their frustration at the president.
Earlier this week Trump refused to answer questions about Jacob Blake’s shooting and didn’t mention the incident in his speech, although did elude to the situation in “Democrat-led” Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Defying pandemic guidelines, he addressed a largely unmasked and tightly packed together crowd to score points against his political opponent Joe Biden.
On criticism of his response to the coronavirus the POTUS said “hundreds of thousands of more Americans” would have died if Biden had been in office.
At present 180,000 Americans have died of the coronavirus during Trump’s term in office.
The first ever political convention ever held at the White House concluded with all the hallmarks of typical Trump showmanship - opera and fireworks.
The latter spelt out his vision in the sky very clearly to his adoring masses and perhaps as a sharp rebuke to those outside, “Trump 2020”.
