Pink Floyd - Any Colour You Like - #TDSOTM50 Animated Video Competition
For over 30 years, The Dark Side of the Moon has been an important part of my life, so I was very excited to learn about the competition and the chance to do some work with material of the album I consider the best ever made. Alas, it was only at the end of October when I heard about it, so the last two months of 2023 have been a very busy time for me. With around 275 hours of work dedicated to the project while also having to take care of my commissional work, I´m happy, proud, and very relieved I made it in time.
Almost all of the work was done in the 3D software Blender. The majority of the time went into setting up the scenes and the keyframe animation after that. The editing was also mainly done in Blender by keyframing the cameras. Mastering and a little bit of compositing was done with Avid Media Composer. The video is upscaled to 4K to counter YouTube´s poor compression and also because the rendering of native 4K would have taken way too long to meet the deadline. The animation is not in HDR because I neither have the experience nor the equipment to properly handle it.
I used assets from the Blender add-ons Baga Pie for the model and idle animation of the flowers and the character models and walk cycles from Procedural Crowds as bases to work on, as well as procedural materials like the Desert Sand by Ryan King and the procedural setup of the Animated Branching Vines by Max Edge. NASA provided the free to use texture maps of the moon and night sky. The other HDRi environment textures come from Polyhaven.com. I also heavily relied on the tutorials and knowledge provided by members of the awesome Blender community on YouTube and Mastodon´s #b3d .
