Empirical and molecular formulas are two types of chemical formulas that are derived by determining the masses of all the elements that combine to create a molecule.
Empirical formula
Shows the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound. It doesn't necessarily represent the arrangement of atoms in the actual molecule. For example, the molecular formula for hydrogen peroxide is H2O2, but the empirical formula is HO because the simplest ratio of H and O atoms is 1:1.
Molecular formula
Shows the exact number of each type of atom in a molecule of a compound. For example, the molecular formula for butane is C4H10. The molecular formula is often a multiple of the empirical formula.
