Hey everyone. I'm Max Dalton, and in this video I'm going to show you how to type accents, symbols, and special character letters on an iPhone or iPad.

Accent marks, also known as diacritics, symbols, and special characters can be critical to effective communication. For example, you'll need to use an accent mark if you want to refer to someone as a divorcee -- otherwise it would look like divorce. Whether you want to insert a tilde or a circumflex, or just change the dollar sign to a symbol associated with another currency, you can do it fairly easily with a special touch command on your iPhone or iPad keyboard.

Now let's walk through how to type accents, symbols, and special character letters on an iPhone or iPad.

Step 1. Bring up the iPhone or iPad on-screen keyboard in any application you're in that makes use of the keyboard. In this example, I'll use the Notes app.

Step 2. Hold your finger gently against the keyboard character you want to see associated accents and symbols for. If there are associated accents and symbols, they will appear in a pop-up box directly above the letter you're holding your finger against. Be very careful not to push too hard against the screen and perform a force touch. This will cause all of the characters on your keyboard to disappear, and the space where your keyboard was previously will turn into a track pad where you can move the cursor around on the screen. If this happens, you'll need to remove your finger from the screen and try again.

Step 3. Continue holding your finger against the screen and move it over the accented letters and symbols that appear in the pop-up box. As your move your finger past each item, that item will turn blue to indicate that it is currently selected. When the accented letter or symbol you want to insert is selected, remove your finger from the screen. That character will be inserted into your document.

Repeat this process as needed to insert any character accents or symbols into documents or text fields on your iPhone or iPad.
