Battle of Lenino - an armed clash on October 12–13, 1943 near the town of Lenino on the Miereja River in eastern Belarus (8 km from the border with Russia) fought as part of the Orsha Operation by the Red Army ( 33rd Army of the Western Front and its 1st Army). Tadeusz Kościuszko Polish Infantry Division ) and the Wehrmacht ( 337th Infantry Division , supported by reserves of the XXXIX Panzer Corps ). It was a baptism of fire for Polish units subordinated to the army of the Soviet Unionand the beginning of the so-called combat route People's Army of Poland . During the Polish People's Republic , the battle became a symbol, and its anniversary (October 12) was celebrated as Polish Army Day.
