How significant is Christianity to the American way of life? There was a time when politics was somewhat intertwined with Christianity, but has that changed over time, or was it ever even really true? Eli Slack is here to explain the idea of civil religion and what that means today.
In 1954, following a sermon by Reverend George Daugherty, President Dwight Eisenhower signed congressional legislation to add the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance. The stated purpose was to distinguish the Christian democracy of the United States from the atheist communism of the USSR. Daugherty referred to atheists as spiritual parasites and called atheist Americans a contradiction in terms. Today, 21% of Americans claim no religion at all, a significant shift from the 1950s.
With the spread of Christian nationalism in the U.S., it seems that this first act of civil religion by Eisenhower paved the way for a more religiously infused political landscape.
