DISCLAIMER: I can only share what works for me, and I'm not promising that what worked for me will work for you. But maybe it will. The only way you can find out what works best for you and your writing process is by experimenting with a bunch of things.
Also, this is the second book in a multi-book series that follows the same characters as they try to defeat the same villain. Some of this advice may not apply to duologies or multi-book series of interconnected standalone volumes.
