About the Event:
Since 1 January 2012, aviation has been included in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The inclusion of international carriers in the scheme has prompted intense international opposition from the US and BASIC countries, including an unsuccessful legal challenge before the European Court of Justice and a ban on Chinese airlines participating in the scheme. Warnings of potential retaliatory measures abound, prompting fears of a potential trade war.
Against this background, this IIEA seminar explored different perspectives on the scheme, examined the impacts of the EU-ETS for European and international aviation and considered ways forward for a sustainable aviation sector at a global level.
Speakers:
• Jos Delbeke, Director General for Climate Action at the European Commission
• Ulrich Schulte-Strathaus, Secretary General of the Association of European Airlines
• Vincent Harrison, Director of Strategy, Regulation and B2B at the Dublin Airport Authority
