The Barber of Ferryhill: Duncan Harley | My Aberdeen Scratch Night | Thursday 8 October 2015 | The Lemon Tree
I have rarely visited Ferryhill and suspect that the place may, in fact, be barberless. No matter, if there were indeed a true Barber of Ferryhill, the establishment would resemble barbers everywhere. A smiling lady dressed in black, well-armed with sharp instruments, stands just out of reach in the mirror. As she cuts, she banters incessantly about the weather, foreign holidays and that Mrs Brown down the road, while the paying victim squirms and fears the worst! One wrong answer and you risk becoming just one more sprawled bloody corpse in the barber's chair courtesy of the violin case in the corner. I find it best to dominate the entire conversation. It's both safer and less stressful, plus you often get a better haircut.
About Polly
Duncan Harley is an established writer and contributes regular features to several Scottish publications including Leopard Magazine and Aberdeen Voice. His short stories include vignettes of North East life throughout the past few decades .
Following on from the success of Freshly Squeezed Theatre in January, The Lemon Tree has created a programme of Scratch Nights. On these evenings we’ll present a showcase of 10 minute plays from playwrights based in the North East and beyond, all responding to the theme of the night ‘Northern Lights’, what it means to us and our lives, and the stories attached to it.
