The first of two webinars discussing how protected and conserved areas contribute to the wider aims of sustainable development and to building back better in the wake of the pandemic.

The first, on 16th February, provides guidance on the contributions of area-based conservation to many of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and looks at how this can be translated into direct financial returns to help with protected area management or support communities living in or around the area. It should be of interest to anyone trying to integrate protected areas more fully into a country’s sustainable development agenda.

The second, on 23rd February, highlights practical tools and guidance for assessing and accounting for nature-based solutions from protected and conserved areas. Participants will be introduced to the Protected Area Benefits Assessment Tool, a cost-effective, participatory approach to identifying economic and non-economic benefits derived from area-based conservation, and how to use it with individual sites. The webinar will conclude with a discussion on recommendations for a more consistent reporting mechanism for benefits, which could help with a range of reporting from funding reports to targets under the new Global Biodiversity Framework.
