How did a post from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his recent visit to Lakshadweep, spark off social media comments from the Maldives? How does it relate to the Maldives government’s position on India of late? lets find out.
Recently, PM Narendra Modi tweeted on his X account about his Lakshadweep Islands visit. He supported Lakshadweep tourism in his tweets. Although he didn't mention anything about the Maldives, the population of Maldives "assumed" that he was talking against the tourism of Maldives.
Many Maldives youngsters started commenting offensive, racist, xenophobic, and derogatory statements about his post. Among them was Mariyam Shiuna, Maldives Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts, who wrote: “What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr. Narendra diver with life jacket. #VisitMaldives #SunnySideOfLife”
2 of her colleagues who are ministers also made similar comments, one of them posted a photo from the Bora Bora Islands in French Polynesia. and tried to convince everyone that it was the sunset of Maldives.
Now all 3 of them are suspended already. But they don't understand the damage they have done to the nation. The previous year, there were more than 2 lakh Indian tourists in Maldives which is the largest among any other nations' contribution. But the series of tweets has caused the trend of #boycottmaldives and #visitlakshadweep. Which is also going to affect the Maldives economy.
Amid this, Celebs like John Abraham, Shraddha Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, and many more are supporting Lakshadweep tourism. This has already caused the cancellation of 8000+ hotel bookings and 2000+ flights!
Apart from this, Maldives was getting closer to China as China was investing in some of Maldives's projects. Which already had made Indo-Maldives relations a bit tense. But the tweets have caused more havoc to the Maldives Economy.
