Despite popular belief, new research suggests that cannabis does not have creativity-enhancing effects.
Researchers conducted two studies with more than 300 cannabis users from Washington state, where the substance has been legalized.
The participants were asked to generate new ideas within a short time frame. Some participants were under the influence of cannabis, but others had been sober for at least 12 hours.
A separate group of individuals then rated the ideas that had been generated.
No significant differences in creative ability were found among the two groups.
But when asked to rate their own ideas, participants under the influence of cannabis tended to evaluate themselves as more creative.
Those under the influence of cannabis also rated the ideas of other people as more creative.
As the study’s corresponding author summarized, “cannabis probably won’t actually make you any more or less creative.”
But "cannabis will make you think you are more creative, and make you think others are more creative as well.”
The research was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology.
