Breakin' the Chainz by Crashdïet reimagined with AI 🤖
About the project
I used lyrics from the Swedish sleaze metal band @realcrashdiet in an AI-tool to create an ”album" of sorts, consisting of - not covers - but totally reimagined tracks. Let me present: CrashdAIet. Please check out all the tracks on the channel.
Suno is a music creation program that uses AI to create complete and custom music tracks in seconds. It's not perfect by any means. For example, you can definitely hear some artifacts in the singing (almost auto-tune’ish) at times. The structure of the songs can be a bit off, and the software adds a quirk here and there. After a few tries, I was able to produce listenable and pretty enjoyable tracks from the originals.
The process
I picked out the songs, copy and pasted the lyrics in the software, experimented with different tags and prompts for genres for each track and picked the ones that stood out the most. That's it. I've done little to no post-production. Suno completes the entire track. On one or two tracks, I've cut the outro or faded it out for a cleaner end product - but that's it. I aimed for a broad mix of genres to display the versatility of the tool. From reggae to dubstep, from jazz to metal. It’s a bit of everything in here. It’s fun, stupid and at times a bit silly. Especially to hear a song like "In the Raw" in a disco-kind of style or Rust in a really pretentious classical/opera setting.
Please look at this as an art project or tech demo of sorts—a showcase of what AI can do in mid-2024. This project of course has no affiliation with Crashdïet whatsoever. It just kind of amazes me how easy and user-friendly tools like this have become. You can create a full track in any genre in 30 seconds. It's astonishing how good the quality is considering the minimal effort. There are definitely flaws and you could also argue that AI-generated music lacks ’soul’ (for the lack of a better word). Something just feels ’off’ at times.
It’s a bit scary (but most of all exciting) to think that this is probably just baby-AI compared to what we'll have in the coming years. How will we value art, music, movies and other creations in the future? How will human-created media be compared and valued against AI-created media? Only time will tell, but it's sooo interesting to live in this era and be able to use tools like this.
Why Crashdïet?
They’re amazing! Catchy, sleazy songs and with a look and attitude that are on point. Even though they've had a pretty rough path with their singers, they’ve always maintained the highest quality of sleazy rock n’ roll extravaganza. As a native of Sweden, I've been able to catch them live multiple times with all singers except the late and great Dave Lepard. From Olli to Simon to Gabriel and now John, all have done a great job of carrying the torch and fronting the band. Martin, Peter and, up until his recent departure, Eric are just the best (hi, Michael!).

Note: The looping background videos for each track was created with AI as well, using a tool called Noisee. It’s a bit artsy and quirky - kind of ’uncanny valley’ (I’ve added blur which helps a bit though) - so just take it for what it is :) Custom CrashdAIet logo edited by me and everything was put together in Adobe Premiere.
