STORYLINE:

Thousands of demonstrators have marched through Genoa to protest against racism, as hundreds of riot police stood by.

Some of the demonstrators held up effigies of the G-8 leaders.

With less than 24 hours to go before the start of the G-8 heads of state summit in the Italian port city on Friday, thousands of demonstrators have arrived to take part in anti-globalisation demonstrations.

Following last month's battles surrounding the E-U summit in Gothenburg, trouble is expected.
