Ursula von der Leyen was proposed for President of the European Commission for a second term by the leaders of EU countries.

The candidate will take the floor in Parliament’s plenary session in July and outline her vision and plans as Commission President, followed by a debate with MEPs.

The vote by secret paper ballot will follow after.

The Commission President is elected for a five-year term by the European Parliament, following the European elections. The European Council proposes a presidential candidate to the Parliament. The proposed candidate generally comes from the largest political group in the Parliament. The Parliament has to approve the new Commission President by an absolute majority. Once approved, the European Council officially appoints the new President.

Parliament elects the President of the Commission, by absolute majority, via a secret ballot. If the candidate does not obtain the required majority, the leaders of EU countries will need to propose a new candidate within a month and Parliament will vote on the new candidate.
