Did We Discover The First Bloody Mary Cocktail Recipe? - The Mary Rose - Cocktails After Dark - Glen And Friends Cooking
What is the history of the Bloody Mary cocktail? Who invented the Bloody Mary Cocktail? When was the Bloody Mary cocktail invented? These are great questions about the mythology of the Bloody Mary Cocktail recipe... How does the 1939 Vodka and Tomato Juice Cocktail from Havana's La Florida Bar called the 'Mary Rose' fit into cocktail history, and why have none of the big cocktail writers included the Mary Rose cocktail in their histories of the Bloody Mary Cocktail, Red Snapper Cocktail and Red Hammer Cocktail? Is this Mary Rose Cocktail the very first printed recipe of the Vodka and Tomato Cocktail recipe known as the Bloody Mary Cocktail?
The 'History' of the Bloody Mary cocktail starts with a claim made by the Grand Daughter of French bartender Fernand Petiot. She claims (without verification) that Ferdinand invented the Bloody Mary in 1921 at the New York Bar in Paris, which later became Harry's New York Bar, a frequent hangout of Ernest Hemingway (is there a bar that Hemingway didn't hang out in?) The claim is: this cocktail was originally referred to as a "Bucket of Blood".
New York's 21 Club claims that it was invented in the 1930s by bartender Henry Zbikiewicz, or by the comedian George Jessel, who frequented the Club. A Dec 1939 gossip column apparently references this drink: "George Jessel's newest pick-me-up which is receiving attention from the town's paragraphers is called a Bloody Mary: half tomato juice, half vodka." But I can't find the column or newspaper in question - and anyway this is after the Floridita 'Mary Rose' recipe was printed at the start of 1939.
Fernand Petiot himself (in a 1964 article for the New Yorker) claims to have invented the modern Bloody Mary in 1934, refining George Jessel's original drink, while working at the King Cole Room in New York's St. Regis Hotel.
So which is it? Did Fernand invent the Bloody Mary in Paris in 1921, or New York in 1934... or probably neither.
The thing is; none of the above can be documented with actual printed recipes and proof from the time in question. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this concoction in any verifiable newspaper, or in any printed cocktail book from prior to 1939, and most cocktail writers point to recipes after 1946.
The 1939 printing of Floridita's Mary Rose cocktail; which predates the first known Bloody Mary Cocktail in Lucius Beebe's Stork Club bar book in 1946 by 7 years.
There is a cocktail called the Red Snapper in the 1941 cocktail book by Crosby Gaiges that is for all intents and purposes a Bloody Mary of today.
I am certain that the 'Mary Rose Cocktail' that I present here is the first known printing of the classic Bloody Mary Cocktail recipe - one clue that it may have arrived in Havana Cuba from somewhere else is the inclusion of the name 'Domingo Bures' in the title of the recipe. I looked up Domingo and they appear in many boat manifests from the 1930s travelling between Miami and Havana, and also appear to have travelled frequently to New York. So Domingo could have tasted a Bloody Mary at a bar in New York, forgot the name and then related the drink to Constantino Ribalaigua (the bartender at Floridita)... and the Mary Rose was born. What Bloody Mary are you having with Brunch? So if you are just starting out on your road to being an educated barfly, getting behind the bar for the first time, and learning how to drink, follow along with cocktails after dark.
