The annual water flower market opened to the public on Saturday, in Guangzhou City, south China's Guangdong Province, where visitors can buy flowers or enjoy the festive atmosphere.
People in Guangdong Province preserve a unique tradition of opening flower markets during China's Spring Festival. Back in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), flower farmers used to transport their flowers with boats to markets, or sell flowers on their boats during the Spring Festival. With time going by, this particular practice became today's water flower market.
This year's water flower market opened with traditional performances like lion dance and roster dance. Visitors were surrounded by fresh and colorful flowers.
Apart from selling and buying flowers, the market also had master craftsmen to teach traditional skills of paper cutting, copper forging and embroidery, and artists to give cultural performances.
The water flower market will last to Jan. 27, and each day it is expected to have some 50,000 visitors.
