In the opening talk Tim Macfarlane discusses the use of glass in his practice's projects, focusing on its fabrication and structural properties.
Tim Macfarlane founded Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners in 1985. He is a consultant structural engineer who has an international reputation for his pioneering work with structural glass. A former head of Technical Studies in the AA Diploma School, he continues to teach and lecture internationally.
Following Macfarlane's talk, James Carpenter, an artist and an innovator in material technologies, shows several of his projects that explore the properties of glass not only on a structural level but also on a perceptive and cognitive level, especially in relation to light. New York-based James Carpenter Design Associates was established in 1979 and have received numerous major architectural and public art commissions.
