LEADIN
Lithuanians are celebrating their country's 1,000 birthday.
Although archaeology tells us that people lived in what is now Lithuania as early as 9th-8th millennium BC, the country was first mentioned in 1009 in the Quedlinburg Annals, an 11th century chronicle named after a German monastery.
STORYLINE:
They came from across the country to the region of Kernave, near the Lithuanian capital Vilnius, to celebrate the symbolic 1000-year-birthday of the country.
Dressed in Medieval style clothing, hundreds of participants set about re-creating an age long gone.
Stews bubbled in traditional copper pots, as visitors practised ancient skills like archery, pottery and jewellery making.
Archaeologist Daiva Luktarniene, explains that although the country was first recorded as a country in 1009, people lived here even earlier than that.
"The roots of Lithuania are older than 1000 years. We shouldn't forget that this is only the first mentioning of the country's name in chronicles. It has a very deep meaning - to celebrate this anniversary now and to show how people lived before".
