The 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe marks a dramatic departure from its predecessor, adopting a boxy, rugged design language that gives it a more adventuresome spirit. This third-generation Santa Fe stretches its wheelbase by 2.6 inches while reducing front overhang, allowing for a more balanced and athletic stance. The exterior styling takes inspiration from the new Hyundai Tucson, with a similarly bold front fascia dominated by T-shaped LED daytime running lights. However, the Santa Fe differentiation comes from its more upright greenhouse and pronounced fender flares that give it a tougher, off-road vibe.
Complementing the rugged looks is increased functionality, like integrated roof rails designed to accommodate rooftop tents, as well as a wider rear tailgate opening to handle bulkier gear for weekend getaways. It seems Hyundai wants the Santa Fe to appeal to young, active families looking to use their SUV for more than just school runs and shopping trips.
Motivation comes from an available turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four, replacing the old naturally aspirated 2.5-liter base engine. Output is a stout 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, gains of 86 hp and 51 lb-ft over the outgoing model. This powerplant is mated to a new 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. While we've yet to test its real-world performance, the powertrain specs are promising, suggesting the Santa Fe will deliver satisfying acceleration whether driving around town or merging onto highways.
Early impressions of the driving dynamics point to a relaxing, comfortable ride with secure handling when pushed harder through corners. Don't expect the agility of a sport sedan, but the Santa Fe finds a good balance between family hauler and driver's SUV. The available HTRAC all-wheel drive system provides peace of mind in slippery conditions. Fuel economy estimates are yet to be released, but expect a slight improvement over the current front-wheel drive model's 22 mpg city / 29 mpg highway.
Moving inside, the interior takes on a different personality from the exterior. Instead of rugged and boxy, the design motif is sleek and driver-focused. Horizontal lines and uncluttered surfaces give a spacious, airy feel. Like the Tucson, the Santa Fe sports a connected dual-screen display panel, with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen angled towards the driver. Knurled metal knobs for core functions like volume and tuning provide tactile feedback amidst the high-tech displays.
Both rows of seating get the full treatment, with available heated and ventilated front seats, heating for the 2nd row, and optional captain's chairs offering first-class comfort. Even 3rd row passengers aren't neglected, with dedicated climate vents and cupholders keeping minivan-esque comfort levels.
On the tech front, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration features prominently, as do multiple USB charge ports, an available head-up display, and an optional top-down parking camera view to make maneuvering in tight spaces less stressful. Driver assistance systems include forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and more.
With passenger and cargo room a priority, the Santa Fe impresses with 42.6 inches of 2nd row legroom and 18.4 cubic feet behind its power-folding 3rd row. Seats tuck neatly into the floor when not in use, and sliding 2nd row seats allow flexible configurations. Thoughtful interior storage solutions abound, like an under-floor rear cargo area perfect for hiding valuables.
