National standardized certification for medical interpreters is a necessary step toward ensuring qualified language access to all LEP patients throughout the country. The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, an independent non-profit organization formed in the fall of 2009, pioneered the first national certification exams for healthcare interpreters in the country. After years of collaborative and rigorous work with supporting and founding organizations in the field, written exams for interpreters of all language pairs and oral exams for Spanish interpreters are being conducted across the country. Another milestone was reached this summer: the National Board certified its first batch of medical interpreters.
This presentation will cover the basic aspects of our program and exams, including a step-by-step description of the prerequisites, registration process, types of credentialing, and the scope, topics and format of the written and oral exams. We will also provide suggestions on how to prepare and important updates to the program, such as number of certified interpreters to date, a timeline for development of the next oral exams and details on the first-ever directory of certified medical interpreters.
