The sounds and calls of wombats at night in the Australian bush. Although they are generally quiet, wombat's do make a range of sounds including loud rasping calls and soft grunts. Wombats are territorial, and they can often be heard squabbling aggressively. From about 0:45 on this video you can hear the rasping calls which are often giving when two wombats are having a dispute. These calls are sometimes mistaken for the similar-sounding call of the Eastern Barn Owl.
The audio in this video spectrogram was recorded near my tent at night in the Capertee Valley, NSW, Australia - the sound of a Common Wombat grazing with a couple of hearty sneezes (the wombat's, not mine!) These large, stocky marsupials are found in a variety of habitats in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania and Flinders Island.
