A native English speaker was asked to speak on this Phase 2 topic:
“Describe a memorable holiday you have had.”
This is what he said – watch the video and see if you can hear any useful vocabulary or phrases to use in your IELTS test:
“I’m going to tell you about a holiday I had about 5 years ago. It was on an island called ‘Koh Surin’, which is in the south of Thailand. It’s very near Phuket, which is a much bigger island, and to get to Koh Surin, we had to fly to Phuket and take the ferry over to Koh Surin.”
“Koh Surin is a very, very beautiful island. It’s the… it’s very picturesque – it’s the sort of island that you expect to see on a picture postcard.”
“It’s a typical tropical island that you might see in a Hollywood movie – white sand, palm trees, crystal clear water…”
“… and the holiday was organized by the company that I was working for at the time. They took the staff down to Koh Surin, and it was a great opportunity because although I worked for the same company there was a number of people that I had never really spoken to, and I’d never really spoken to them on a social basis, so it was great I got the opportunity to meet people in that way.”
“It was also a great opportunity because we had… we as a family had never really been involved in water sports, and we did… we were involved in things like snorkeling, and I’d never been snorkeling before, and it was really eye opening.”
“I didn’t realize just how beautiful coral is, I didn’t realize how beautiful looking at fish is, I’d never really appreciated why people might go diving previously, but I certainly did after my trip to Koh Surin.”
“It was a very remarkable experience, and one that I won’t forget.”
