This is a small cherry calabash bowl with a round bottom. The cherry is a piece that I split off of a larger blank as I prepared to turn a larger bowl a few years ago. Recently I was seeing several videos of “round bottom” bowls. Seems there were a few clubs across the country that were having the same challenge. What I found was that the round bottom, while not a new idea, is one that we don’t think about often. And when we do think about it, we tend to make it more complicated than it actually is. At least I did.
I always assumed that even the calabash bowls needed a foot, or at least a concave area to sit on. But understanding that the calabash bowl comes from the fruit of the calabash tree, which has a round bottom, it becomes very understandable that these bowls should have a round bottom.
