At the Qualcomm 5G Summit, fixed wireless access experts delivered a masterclass on how 5G and Wi-Fi meet at the intersection of broadband.
Ben Wood, Chief Analyst and CMO of CCS Insight, moderated the discussion, opening with information about the recent growth trends of customer premises equipment (CPE) devices. CPE devices (for example: mobile hotspots) are bringing 5G into the home and into enterprises, solving last mile connectivity issues.
The growth in the CPE market has been substantial in the past several years. In 2019, there were 56 companies manufacturing CPE devices. As of April 2022, there were 72. In 2019, there were 58 CPE devices on the market. We’re now at 215 — a growth rate of 260 percent.
Fixed wireless access technology has been around for some time, but 5G has been a game changer for the segment. With the 5G NR standard, significant enhancements have been made to spectral efficiency. There’s also more access to spectrum than ever before, including Sub 6GHz and mmWave frequencies.
All of these things put together allow Qualcomm to achieve 10 Gbps speeds with its newest Modem-RF system. This is crucial for last mile access. Laying fiber is expensive, but CPE devices can be installed easily and provide users with a high-speed broadband connection quickly and efficiently. This is useful in both rural areas that are difficult to access and urban areas where users might be utilizing older technologies like DSL.
Now there’s an opportunity to connect our homes wirelessly. CPE devices, as well as the increased connectivity offered by more spectrum, will connect our homes to everything, all the time.
