An ancient centre of Muslim Granada with its old world charm intact, it's easy to see why Albayzin is a World Heritage site. Getting lost in these streets and tucked away alleys is something I sorely miss when I look back on my two weeks in Granada. This is the barrio (neighbourhood) that sits on a hill opposite the Alhambra. Known as Granada's Moorish quarter, some say the name comes from the Arabic 'al- bayyāzīn' meaning the suburb of falconers. No matter what kind of map or alertness you bring, Albayzin will have you lose your way. A maze that distorts your sense of direction and time, and rewards you with teterias (Arab tea houses), fat cats, bougainvillea outbursts and sudden views of the Alhambra when you least expect it. The little fountain you see here had a message painted above it in Spanish that meant: How I wish I were a fountain in your neighbourhood, so that every time you walked by I would feel so close to your lips. Pretty much how I feel about Albayzin 😍
🎵The song by Gnawledge incidentally goes Nunca fui a Granada, meaning I've never been to Granada 😁
