The Palaeogenetics Group at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) uses genomic information from archaeological skeletons to resolve questions about human evolution and prehistory. Led by Joachim Burger, the group uses biostatistical methods to investigate the prehistoric population genetics of humans and domesticated animals. The group's research has shown that both humans and their domesticated animals migrated into Central Europe at the onset of the Neolithic period around 7,500 years ago. In Europe, these prehistoric farmers admixed with the people of the long-established hunter-gatherer culture, with whom they co-existed for thousands of years.
Dr. Karola Kirsanow invites everyone interested to join her on a tour of the JGU Institute of Anthropology.
